Modern Railway Station to Open in Major City Next Month

Karachi’s New Modern Railway Station to Open on September 10

Federal Minister for Railways, Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, has confirmed that Karachi’s state-of-the-art railway station will be inaugurated on September 10 as part of Pakistan Railways’ nationwide modernization plan.

Speaking to the media during a visit to Faisalabad railway station, Abbasi said the project is in line with the Prime Minister’s vision to enhance both short- and long-term railway operations.

Recent upgrades include:

  • Full digitization of ticketing

  • Real-time train tracking system

  • ATMs at major stations

  • Free Wi-Fi at 40 Punjab stations (in partnership with the Punjab government)

Outsourcing of various services — such as passenger and freight trains, guest houses, saloons, hospitals, and schools — will be completed by September 30 to improve service quality and boost revenue. Special saloons once reserved for officials are now available to the public at affordable rates.

Cleanliness at key stations is now handled by solid waste management companies, while provincial food authorities will ensure high-quality meals for passengers.

The Punjab government is investing Rs. 50 billion to upgrade eight railway routes. Additionally, Rs. 250 billion has been allocated for a double-track system and modern signaling between Lahore and Rawalpindi, reducing travel time to just over two hours.
