Moeen Ali Names Saeed Anwar as His Cricketing Inspiration

In cricket’s rich history, only a handful of players have left behind a legacy strong enough to inspire future generations. For former England all-rounder Moeen Ali, one such icon is Pakistan’s legendary opener Saeed Anwar.

Moeen Ali’s Admiration for Saeed Anwar

Speaking on his podcast Beard Before Wicket, Moeen Ali revealed that Saeed Anwar is his all-time favorite cricketer. He described Anwar as “massively underrated” despite being one of the most stylish and fearless players of his era.

“Saeed Anwar is a legend, but he is massively underrated. They don’t talk about him enough,” Moeen said. “His record may not be the best statistically, but the way he played was incredible. He was my favorite player, and I tried to copy his batting when I was younger.”

Moeen further added that many players from Anwar’s era also considered him the best.

Saeed Anwar’s Iconic Career

Saeed Anwar is remembered for his record-breaking 194 against India in 1997, which stood as the highest individual score in One Day Internationals for more than a decade.

His brilliance went beyond that historic innings:

  • He remains Pakistan’s leading century-maker in ODIs with 20 hundreds.

  • Known for blending elegance with aggression, Anwar dominated bowlers with both grace and power.

  • His fearless approach at the top of the order influenced a whole generation of opening batsmen.

An Underrated Legend

While cricket discussions often highlight players with bigger statistical records, Saeed Anwar’s greatness lies in the inspiration he left behind. Moeen Ali’s heartfelt tribute reflects how Anwar’s style and courage continue to resonate with cricketers worldwide.

For fans and players alike, Saeed Anwar’s legacy proves that true greatness in cricket is not just about numbers, but also about the ability to inspire generations.
