NA Panel Demands Urgent Action Against Delays in 5G Launch

National Assembly Subcommittee Reviews LDI and Spectrum Issues, Calls for Comprehensive Stakeholder Input

The National Assembly’s Subcommittee on Information Technology, chaired by Sher Ali Arbab, convened to address key issues in Pakistan’s telecom and digital sectors. Members Umair Khan Niazi, Mahesh Kumar, and Zulfiqar Ali Bhatti were present during the session.

Focus on Long Distance International (LDI) Matters

One of the main points of discussion was the ongoing situation concerning Long Distance International (LDI) service providers. The committee was briefed on existing challenges, including pending cases and blocked service providers.

Following the session, the committee issued a directive for a detailed report to be submitted in the next meeting. The convener, Sher Ali Arbab, emphasized the importance of hearing directly from the nine LDI companies currently facing service blocks.

Officials from the Law and Justice Division recommended that while stakeholder input is essential, participation should be well-structured. They advised against pressure groups and large delegations.

“To ensure effective dialogue, each stakeholder group should be represented by no more than two individuals,” said the committee chair.

4G and 5G Spectrum Auction Under Review

In addition to LDI concerns, the subcommittee addressed the delayed auction of 4G and 5G spectrum in Pakistan. Members highlighted the urgency of resolving these delays to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure and expand high-speed internet access.

To gain a deeper understanding of the challenges, the subcommittee has requested a full briefing on the current status of spectrum allocation and auction timelines in its next session.

PTA and Ministry of IT Called for Input

The committee has directed that:

  • Stakeholders from spectrum-related companies be invited to share their insights and hurdles.

  • The Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Secretary of the Ministry of Information Technology be summoned to provide official feedback and policy direction.

Conclusion

The subcommittee’s proactive approach signals a commitment to transparency, stakeholder inclusion, and timely action in addressing Pakistan’s telecom sector challenges. With crucial decisions ahead regarding LDI services and spectrum allocation, the upcoming sessions will play a key role in shaping the future of the country’s digital development.
