Net Metering Units Jump 124% in July 2025

Pakistan Sees 124% Growth in Net Metering Units in July

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s net metering units surged 124% year-on-year in July 2025, reflecting increased adoption of solar energy by households and businesses, according to NEPRA data compiled by Arif Habib Limited. The rise comes as higher power tariffs and the end of temporary relief measures earlier in the year encouraged a shift toward renewable energy.

Key Highlights

  • Net metering contributed 115 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in July, increasing its share in total electricity generation by 47 basis points compared with July 2024.

  • On a month-on-month basis, net metering units declined 19%, reflecting seasonal variations in solar output.

  • Overall electricity generation fell 5.1% year-on-year in July.

Future Outlook

NEPRA projects that power demand will grow 2.8% in fiscal year 2025, indicating that while net metering is expanding, the country will continue to rely on the national grid to meet energy needs.
