Pakistan Faces Severe Spectrum Shortage, 5G Auction on the Horizon
Pakistan is currently dealing with the most critical spectrum shortage in the region, with just 274 MHz of spectrum available, according to documents from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
In comparison, neighboring countries are far ahead. Saudi Arabia has 1200 MHz, while Thailand and Bangladesh each have 600 MHz, leaving Pakistan lagging behind in digital connectivity and telecom growth.
To address this gap, the government has initiated steps toward the 5G spectrum auction, which aims to improve service quality and reduce network congestion. The Frequency Allocation Board has already prepared spectrum blocks, while an Auction Advisory Committee is overseeing the process. PTA first initiated the auction plan in 2023 and later brought in an international consultant in November 2024 to analyze the market, set spectrum pricing, and recommend an auction design.
Potential Benefits of 5G Spectrum
According to PTA’s estimates, the introduction of 5G could transform Pakistan’s economy:
-
Boost GDP growth by 1.5% to 2.4%
-
Create 3.1% to 13% more jobs
-
Improve mobile broadband penetration, enhancing digital services nationwide
-
Increase foreign direct investment by 2%
-
Raise exports by up to 1.9%
Globally, 101 countries have already launched 5G, while Pakistan remains behind both regionally and internationally. Currently ranked at the bottom among 16 regional countries in spectrum allocation, Pakistan could climb to sixth place after the upcoming auction.
With demand for faster internet and improved digital services rising, the successful rollout of 5G spectrum is seen as a crucial step toward strengthening Pakistan’s economy and positioning it for future growth.
