Pakistan Navy, China Discover Major Gas Reserves in Arabian Sea
Pakistan Navy, in collaboration with China, has reported the discovery of substantial natural gas reserves deep beneath the Arabian Sea — a development that experts say could play a transformative role in the country’s energy and economic future.
The announcement was made by Rear Admiral (Retd) Fawad Amin Baig during a special segment on Geo News, aired in connection with Pakistan Navy Day on September 8.
According to Rear Admiral Baig, Pakistan’s territorial waters hold not only valuable minerals but also significant untapped energy resources. He credited the Pakistan Navy’s survey efforts, carried out with Chinese assistance, for identifying the gas reserves.
“The next step is to attract investment and technology that can help bring these resources into practical use,” he noted, adding that successful development could support national growth and long-term energy needs.
The seabed survey, conducted with Chinese technical expertise, confirmed the presence of major reserves, with both countries already committed to expanding cooperation in marine exploration. China has pledged to encourage its companies to participate in Pakistan’s offshore oil and gas development, as well as in related industrial ventures.
While the potential is immense, experts caution that challenges remain, particularly in securing investment and overcoming operational barriers. Initiatives by the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) and joint government–military strategies are expected to play a key role in creating a favorable environment for development.
If successfully harnessed, the reserves could reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imported energy, strengthen economic stability, and open new avenues for industrial growth.
Rear Admiral Baig described the discovery as a “promising opportunity” and praised the Pakistan Navy for its role in both safeguarding national waters and helping to uncover valuable marine resources.
