Pakistan Likely to Miss Out on Inaugural World Club Championship Due to PCB Misstep
Pakistan’s hopes of participating in the inaugural World Club Championshipβa much-anticipated global T20 tournamentβare reportedly in jeopardy due to an administrative oversight by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
The World Club Championship, seen as a modern revival of the former Champions League T20, is set to launch next year with top domestic champions from around the world. Lahore Qalandars, the reigning PSL champions, were expected to represent Pakistan in the high-profile event. However, their inclusion now appears unlikelyβnot because of performance, but due to PCBβs failure to attend a key meeting.
According to Geo Super, cricket boards from countries including Australia, England, South Africa, USA, Caribbean, and UAE all sent senior representatives to a critical session in London, organized on the sidelines of the Cricket Connect Summit. This meetingβhosted by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)βwas instrumental in shaping the tournamentβs structure and vision.
Unfortunately, the PCB did not send any representative, despite being invited to send the PSL CEO. A source close to the matter confirmed, βThe PCB was invited, but no one showed up.β As a result, Pakistanβs PSL champions were left out, while competing leagues positioned themselves at the center of the new global franchise platform.
π Whoβs In and Whoβs Out?
While PSL teams are likely to miss out, the Indian Premier League (IPL) will also not participate in the opening edition, despite the BCCIβs endorsement. The tournament will instead feature club champions from:
-
Big Bash League (Australia)
-
SA20 (South Africa)
-
Caribbean Premier League (CPL)
-
Major League Cricket (USA)
-
International League T20 (ILT20 β UAE)
This potential exclusion is especially notable because the PSL is consistently ranked among the top T20 leagues globally, known for its high-quality bowling attacks and competitive matchups.
For Pakistan cricket, missing out on such a platform would be more than a symbolic loss. It highlights a larger issue: governance and representation in modern cricket can be just as important as performance on the field.
β οΈ What It Means for Pakistan Cricket
Pakistan’s players already face limited access to international franchise opportunities, and exclusion from the World Club Championship could further isolate one of cricketβs most passionate fan bases from the global stage.
As other leagues prepare to showcase their champions in front of a worldwide audience, Pakistanβs PSL winners may be forced to watch from the sidelinesβa missed opportunity that underscores the growing importance of strategic administration in international cricket.
