Pakistan Plans Lunar Mission by 2035, Expands Space Cooperation with China

Islamabad/Beijing – In a groundbreaking development for Pakistan’s space ambitions, Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal has announced that SUPARCO (Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission) has been directed to begin preparations for the country’s first lunar mission by 2035, according to Geo News.

The announcement came during Iqbal’s high-level meeting in Beijing with Shan Zhongde, Chairman of China’s Atomic Energy Authority and Space Agency, where the two officials discussed deepening cooperation in the fields of space technology and nuclear energy.

Uraan Pakistan Program Gains Momentum

Under the “Uraan Pakistan” initiative, launched by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, space sciences in Pakistan are gaining new momentum. Minister Iqbal highlighted that Pakistan has successfully launched three satellites in collaboration with China and is now preparing to send its first astronaut to the Chinese space station by 2026.

“This is a new era for space exploration in Pakistan. With strong collaboration from China, we are aligning our science and technology sectors with national development priorities,” said Iqbal.

Climate and Energy Security Also in Focus

In addition to space advancements, the minister emphasized the importance of addressing climate change and ensuring energy, food, and water security. He called for increased cooperation with China in peaceful nuclear energy and emerging technologies, including quantum computing.

He cited the K-2, K-3, and C-5 nuclear power plants as successful examples of Pakistan-China cooperation and stressed the need to further explore alternative energy sources to ensure long-term sustainability.

Boosting Science, Tech, and Education

Iqbal also revealed that Pakistan has established a Quantum Computing Center, aiming to integrate cutting-edge technologies with the country’s economic development plans.

He urged for more academic exchange programs to train young Pakistani scientists and researchers in China, reinforcing the importance of human capital development.

China Reaffirms Support for Pakistan’s Progress

In response, Chairman Shan Zhongde praised Pakistan’s achievements under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), particularly in the infrastructure and energy sectors. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening Pakistan’s capabilities in space research, nuclear energy, and emerging technologies.

“China is proud to be a strategic partner in Pakistan’s transformation. We will continue to work closely to support peaceful and productive technological growth,” Shan said.

Looking Ahead

With plans for a lunar mission by 2035, a space astronaut program by 2026, and stronger cooperation in nuclear and quantum technologies, Pakistan is poised to make significant strides in science and technology over the next decade.
