Pakistan to Use Space Technology for Stronger Disaster Preparedness

ISLAMABAD: The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) is bringing satellite technology and space-based tools into Pakistan’s disaster management system, aiming to move from a reactive response to a proactive strategy.

Speaking at the launch of the training programme “Space-based Disaster Management — Shifting Focus from Reactive to Proactive Approaches” in Islamabad, Suparco’s Member for Technology Zafar Iqbal highlighted the agency’s vision of using science, data, and international collaboration to strengthen national resilience.

Shifting from Response to Preparedness
“These tools enhance early warning systems and support national policies on disaster preparedness,” Mr. Iqbal explained. “The goal is to focus equally on mitigation and adaptation so that we are ready before a crisis occurs.”

Harnessing Satellite Data for Early Action
By using satellite imagery, remote sensing, and geospatial mapping, Suparco can monitor potential risks, detect vulnerable areas, and provide timely, actionable insights to decision-makers. Such efforts, he said, ensure that resources are deployed more effectively while protecting communities and infrastructure.

Building a Safer Future
Mr. Iqbal stressed that the challenge is not just responding after disasters but preparing in advance. “By strengthening resilience before disasters strike, we can save lives, safeguard infrastructure, and reduce the economic impact of natural calamities,” he said.

With this initiative, Pakistan takes a significant step toward modernising disaster risk management and aligning with global best practices through the use of advanced space technology.
