Federal Government Approves Rs. 2 Billion Relief Package for Quaid-e-Azam University
The federal government has approved a Rs. 2 billion financial support package for Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU), Pakistan’s top-ranked higher education institution, to help address ongoing financial challenges.
The decision was made during a recent meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb.
Emergency Funding with a Long-Term Vision
In its official announcement, the ECC confirmed that the emergency funding was approved to ensure the university’s immediate operations can continue without disruption. However, the committee placed a clear condition: QAU must work closely with the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to create a comprehensive financial sustainability plan.
The university will be required to outline long-term strategies aimed at achieving financial independence, reducing the need for similar assistance in the future.
Rising Costs and Budget Constraints
Quaid-e-Azam University has been facing financial difficulties since 2023, with rising inflation and stagnant funding putting pressure on its operations. This has led to delayed salary payments, shortages of essential laboratory supplies, and disruptions to research and academic programs.
According to university representatives, QAU estimated it required at least Rs. 2.5 billion for the current fiscal year. However, the institution had not received any funds prior to this relief package, resulting in salary delays for June and July and pension backlogs for retired staff.
The Joint Coordination Council (JCC)—representing faculty, staff, and academic associations—has been actively engaging with the government, urging for timely financial intervention to keep operations running smoothly.
A Call for Sustainable Education Support
In a recent press release, university employees emphasized the need for timely disbursement of funds to support vital expenses including research activities, medical coverage, part-time teaching costs, and examination-related payments.
The HEC’s proposed 25% budget increase for QAU remains pending approval. Meanwhile, staff associations have warned that protests may occur if outstanding payments are not made soon.
QAU’s Academic Excellence
Despite these financial challenges, Quaid-e-Azam University continues to excel academically. In the Times Higher Education Asia Rankings 2025, QAU secured the 137th position in Asia, and it has consistently been ranked Pakistan’s number one university by both THE and the QS World University Rankings.
