Pakistan’s Water Reservoirs Reach 75% of Capacity Thanks to Heavy Rains

Pakistan’s Major Dams Near Full Capacity, Says Water Resources Minister

Federal Minister for Water Resources Muhammad Mueen Wattoo has announced that water levels in Pakistan’s key reservoirs are currently well above average, marking a positive shift from the seasonal lows usually seen earlier in the year.

Speaking during the question hour in the National Assembly, the minister revealed that Tarbela Dam is at 96% capacity, Mangla Dam at 64%, and Chashma at 83%. On average, national water storage now stands at 75% of total capacity.

Wattoo explained that while water levels in major dams typically drop to their lowest point for two months each year, this year’s figures indicate a strong water storage position across the country.

“The government is fully aware of global and domestic water scarcity challenges. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is personally monitoring the situation, holding high-level meetings every three days to plan new storage projects and long-term solutions for both irrigated and rain-fed areas,” Wattoo said.

On water distribution among provinces, the minister clarified that the 1991 Water Accord is being strictly followed, ensuring each province receives its fair share. Provinces then have the authority to manage and use their allocated water independently.

To further enhance transparency, a telemetry system is being installed for real-time monitoring of water flows, allowing verification of provincial allocations.

“If any province believes it is getting less than its share, it should present evidence. If deliberate cuts are proven, strict action will follow,” he assured.
