Pakistan Steps Up Efforts for Olympic Cricket Qualification at LA 2028
As cricket gears up for its historic return to the Olympic Games after more than 100 years, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is actively working to secure the national team’s place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
According to a report by TelecomAsia.net, the PCB is preparing a formal lobbying campaign aimed at ensuring a transparent and fair qualification system for the six-team men’s T20 tournament scheduled from July 20 to 29, 2028.
Qualification Concerns for Pakistan
Under the proposed regional qualification format, teams like India (Asia), Australia (Oceania), Great Britain (Europe), South Africa (Africa), and the host USA (North America) are expected to secure direct qualification. That leaves only one remaining spot, which may go to a Caribbean team or another high-ranking Asian side — a scenario that could leave Pakistan and New Zealand out of the competition.
In response, the PCB has voiced serious concerns about the lack of clarity and inclusivity in the current qualification structure. A PCB official who attended a recent ICC-related meeting highlighted the urgency of the matter:
“The Olympics are a global platform and cricket’s inclusion is a historic moment. We cannot afford to miss out. We’ll be writing to the ICC and LA28 organisers requesting a clear qualification cut-off — ideally one that comes after the 2026 T20 World Cup.”
PCB’s Proposed Solutions
The PCB has suggested two main options to ensure fairness:
-
Set the ranking cut-off after the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, allowing teams to earn qualification based on recent performances.
-
Organize a dedicated Olympic qualifying tournament, giving all top teams an equal opportunity to compete for a spot.
Currently ranked 8th in the ICC Men’s T20I standings, Pakistan still has multiple bilateral series and major tournaments ahead, giving it a solid chance to improve its position.
Beyond Cricket: The Olympic Dream
For Pakistan, participation in the Olympics goes beyond the game itself. A medal in cricket would be a major achievement and could revive public enthusiasm while boosting global visibility for the sport in the country.
The PCB remains committed to ensuring that Pakistan is not left behind as the world celebrates cricket’s return to the Olympic stage. The board has made it clear that it will not remain silent while its Olympic aspirations are at risk.
