PDMA Warns of Rising Flood Threat as India Opens Thein Dam Gates

India Releases Massive Water from Thein Dam, Punjab Braces for Floods
 August 27, 2025

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned that India has opened all gates of the Thein Dam, releasing massive water flows into the Ravi River. The move has prompted urgent flood alerts across Punjab.

According to the PDMA, approximately 210,000 cusecs of water are currently entering Pakistan at Kot Naina, and inflows are expected to rise further over the next 24 hours. A “very high” flood level is predicted to pass through Jassar, Shahdara, and Head Balloki within the next 48 hours.

Flood Alerts and Precautions

Precautionary alerts have been issued to district officials in Lahore, Gujranwala, Multan, Sahiwal, and Faisalabad, directing them to take immediate flood preparedness measures. The Ravi River is currently witnessing a sharp surge:

  • Jassar: 142,000 cusecs – classified as high flood level

  • Shahdara: 56,000 cusecs – currently at low flood stage

The PDMA has instructed district administrations along the Ravi River to implement emergency evacuation plans, prioritizing the safety of residents in vulnerable river basin areas.

Public Awareness and Safety Measures

PDMA Director General highlighted the importance of public awareness, urging people to follow safety instructions through mosque announcements and local communication channels. He stressed that protecting lives and property should remain the top priority and called on citizens to fully cooperate with authorities, noting that timely precautions can significantly reduce flood-related losses.
