Punjab Announces Routes for 80 Electric Buses in Rawalpindi

Punjab to Launch 80 Electric Buses in Rawalpindi by Mid-October

The Punjab government has announced plans to introduce 80 electric buses in Rawalpindi by the middle of October. The initiative aims to reduce pollution, ease traffic congestion, and improve public transport facilities in the city.

Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema confirmed that the buses will run on 10 newly designated routes covering a total of 86 kilometers. The service will be integrated with Islamabad’s transport network, providing smoother travel between the twin cities.

A new bus depot is under construction on 28 kanals of land along Peshawar Road, with space for up to 100 buses. The project is part of Punjab’s Annual Development Programme 2025–26, which includes building modern urban bus depots and related infrastructure.

Officials stated that the electric bus service will particularly benefit areas not currently served by the Metro Bus system, offering modern and eco-friendly travel options to more residents.
