Punjab Launches Electric Taxi Scheme to Create Jobs and Boost Green Transport

  September 5, 2025

Punjab’s Transport Minister Bilal Yasin has announced the launch of a new electric taxi scheme, designed to create employment opportunities and promote sustainable transport in the province.

Electric Taxi Scheme – A Game Changer

The scheme will officially begin within the next 15 days. Under the program, new electric taxis and bikes will be introduced, with ownership offered on interest-free installments, making them accessible for low-income and unemployed citizens.

The initiative was unveiled during Pakistan’s first Transport Expo, held as part of the province’s ambitious Transport 2030 Vision.

Broader Transport Plans for Punjab

Alongside the electric taxi scheme, Minister Bilal Yasin announced other major projects:

  • Lahore Tram Service: To launch in February 2026, initially running along Jail Road and Main Boulevard, with future extensions planned to Canal Road.

  • Electric Buses & Trams: Deployment of 1,100 vehicles by 2030.

  • Modern Depots: Construction of 41 new depots starting December 2025.

  • Autonomous Vehicle Testing: Planned as part of the long-term strategy.

Infrastructure & Sustainability Goals

To ensure the success of these projects, the Punjab government will install 1,000 electric vehicle charging stations across the province.

The Transport 2030 Vision sets a bold target: converting 80% of Punjab’s transport network to electric by 2030, with the electric taxi scheme serving as a cornerstone of this strategy.

Sindh’s Green Transport Drive

Meanwhile, the Sindh Workers Welfare Board has announced a similar initiative. Sindh Labour Minister Shahid Thaheem confirmed the distribution of 10,000 free electric motorcycles to female industrial workers, aiming to improve women’s mobility while supporting eco-friendly transport solutions.
