Punjab Imposes Ban on Burning Waste as Smog Levels Rise
October 25, 2025
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a smog alert for several major cities, including Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Sahiwal, as air quality continues to decline amid increasing pollution levels.
According to PDMA officials, the air quality index (AQI) in multiple areas has worsened significantly, posing serious health risks to citizens. The authority warned that smog intensity is likely to increase further in the coming days due to ongoing pollution and unfavorable weather conditions.
To control rising pollution, the PDMA has banned the burning of seven materials across Punjab — including solid waste, tires, plastic, polythene bags, rubber, leather, crop residue, and household garbage. The move aims to reduce smog formation and protect public health.

Director General PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia has directed all relevant departments to enforce strict anti-smog measures immediately. He instructed district administrations to ensure full compliance with government orders and take legal action against violators found burning prohibited materials or emitting industrial smoke.
Authorities have also been tasked with monitoring industrial emissions, vehicular smoke, and agricultural burning to minimize pollution.
The PDMA has urged the public to avoid unnecessary outdoor travel, wear masks, and limit exposure to polluted air. Citizens are also encouraged to report any environmental violations, such as open burning or field fires, to their local authorities to help improve air quality.
This latest initiative reflects the Punjab government’s continued efforts to combat air pollution and protect citizens from the harmful effects of smog.
