Punjab Launches Anti-Smog Squads Across Lahore to Curb Rising Pollution

Lahore — The Punjab government has launched a province-wide operation to combat rising air pollution by deploying anti-smog squads across the Lahore Division, including Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura, and Nankana Sahib.
The initiative aims to control pollution caused by activities such as crop residue burning, garbage incineration, and the use of substandard fuel, which have been major contributors to smog in recent years.
The decision was taken in a high-level meeting chaired by Lahore Commissioner Maryam Khan, attended by deputy commissioners and senior district officials.
Commissioner Khan directed authorities to enforce Section 144 against the burning of crop residue, especially near motorways and densely populated areas. She emphasized that strict action would be taken against anyone found burning tyres or solid waste.
“The crackdown against environmental violations will continue without interruption,” said Commissioner Maryam Khan.
Officials informed the meeting that there is no shortage of wheat or flour across the division and that a target of 118,000 acres has been set for wheat cultivation in Lahore this season.
Meanwhile, the dengue prevention drive is also underway. Authorities confirmed no deaths in the past 24 hours, while nine new cases were reported. Over 1,600 dengue breeding sites have been destroyed as part of the campaign.
Commissioner Khan stressed that October is a critical month for dengue control and directed district teams to ensure 100% larva surveillance.
The meeting also reviewed ongoing development projects, including the finalization of e-bus station locations in Lahore and the survey of flood-affected areas, which is being conducted in collaboration with relevant departments.
