Islamabad and Punjab to Adopt US-Style Vehicle Registration System
ISLAMABAD / LAHORE – Big changes are coming to vehicle registration in Pakistan, as the Excise and Taxation Departments in Islamabad and Punjab plan to adopt a new registration model inspired by the United States.
According to recent reports, number plates will soon be issued in the name of the vehicle owner, rather than being tied to the vehicle itself. This new system is being introduced to enhance security, improve traceability, and make ownership verification more efficient.
Key Features of the New Registration System
-
Number Plates Linked to Owner’s Identity:
Unlike the current system where license plates are attached to the vehicle, the new system will register plates directly under the owner’s name. -
New Rule on Vehicle Transfer:
When selling a car, the seller will retain the original number plate, and the buyer will be required to obtain a new one or apply for a customized number plate. -
Enhanced Security and Verification:
The Excise Department believes this change will improve law enforcement’s ability to track vehicle ownership and reduce the misuse of duplicate or stolen plates.
Punjab Expected to Follow Islamabad’s Lead
Officials have confirmed that Punjab is preparing to implement the same model, ensuring a uniform system across major provinces. Once in place, this shift will align Pakistan’s vehicle registration system with international standards.
This change is expected to benefit both vehicle buyers and sellers, while enhancing transparency, ownership verification, and overall road safety.
