Punjab Makes Parrot Registration Compulsory

Punjab Wildlife Department Makes Parrot Registration Mandatory

The Punjab Wildlife Department has announced new regulations requiring the compulsory registration of several parrot species, including Alexandrine, Rose-ringed, Slaty-headed, and Plum-headed parrots. The initiative, introduced on Tuesday, is aimed at curbing illegal trade and strengthening conservation efforts.

Registration Fee and Process
According to the notification, all parrots kept as pets or bred in captivity must now be registered under the second schedule of Wildlife Regulations. Owners will need to pay a registration fee of Rs 1,000 per bird.

Breeder Classification and Sales Rules
The department has also introduced a system to classify breeders into small-scale and large-scale categories for improved monitoring. In addition, the sale of parrots will be allowed only through licensed dealers, ensuring that transactions remain regulated and transparent.

Conservation Goals
A spokesperson for the Wildlife Department said the primary objective of the policy is to safeguard parrot species and prevent their illegal trade. Officials added that the framework is also designed to promote responsible breeding practices across Punjab.
