Punjab University Develops High-Yield Hybrid Rice Seed in Landmark Collaboration with China
In a major breakthrough for Pakistan’s agriculture sector, Punjab University, in collaboration with Wuhan University of China, has successfully developed a new high-yield hybrid rice seed that promises to significantly increase crop production.
📈 Boosting Rice Yields Across Pakistan
According to Dr. Muhammad Ashfaq, Chairman of the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics at Punjab University, this new variety—the first of its kind Hang Lian-type hybrid rice developed in Pakistan—has shown remarkable potential. It can boost rice yields up to 140 maunds per acre, nearly tripling traditional production levels.
✅ Approved and Trial-Tested Nationwide
The Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) has officially approved this hybrid seed after extensive field trials across all four provinces, ensuring its adaptability in diverse agricultural environments.

Dr. Ashfaq also highlighted the variety’s resistance to bacterial diseases, extreme temperatures, and common pests, making it highly sustainable and ideal for local farming conditions.
