Rain washes out opening day of Pakistan-Bangladesh second Test

Heavy rain washed out the first day of the second and final Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on Friday.

Overnight downpours delayed the toss, and after more monsoon rains, the umpires abandoned play shortly after midday.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced, “The first day’s play has been called off due to persistent rain and a wet outfield.” Both teams remained in their hotel, with umpires planning to inspect the ground only after the rain stopped. The weather forecast predicted intermittent monsoon showers throughout the day.

This rain delay is an unfortunate setback for Pakistan, who are eager to level the two-match series after Bangladesh claimed a historic 10-wicket victory in the first Test in Rawalpindi last Sunday. That win marked Bangladesh’s first in 14 Tests against Pakistan.

Pakistan has made some changes to their lineup, notably resting pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi to allow him time with his newborn son. The team, led by Shan Masood, suffered a surprising defeat in the first Test and now faces a must-win situation in the second Test.

On the other hand, Bangladesh is aiming to secure their first-ever Test series victory over Pakistan. Their confidence is bolstered by their impressive performance in the first Test.

Pakistan’s red-ball coach, Jason Gillespie, emphasized the need for a disciplined and relentless approach in the final Test. “Our over rates were very poor in the first Test, and that is unacceptable,” Gillespie said. He stressed that the bowlers need to focus on maintaining a consistent line and length to take 20 wickets.

Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe expressed optimism about his team’s chances, stating, “Beating Pakistan in Pakistan is not an easy task, but the morale of the players is very, very good.” He acknowledged that while the second Test will be a significant challenge, his team is ready to give their best.

Pakistan’s squad for the second Test includes: Shan Masood (captain), Saud Shakeel (vice-captain), Abrar Ahmed, Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam, Khurram Shahzad, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Rizwan (wicket-keeper), Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, and Salman Ali Agha.

Cricket West Indies Calls Emergency Meeting to Revive Test Cricket Legacy Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced an emergency strategic intervention following a challenging Test series against Australia, aimed at revitalizing the team’s long-format performance. In response to the recent series defeat, CWI President Kishore Shallow has convened a special meeting of the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee. To provide expert insight and guidance, he has invited three of the region’s most celebrated cricket legends—Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, and Brian Lara—to join the discussions. These icons will collaborate with existing committee members Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Desmond Haynes, and Ian Bradshaw. “To strengthen the discussions, I have extended invitations to three of our greatest batsmen ever: Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, and Brian Lara,” Shallow said in a recent statement. Together, the trio brings decades of experience and nearly 28,000 Test runs. Their involvement is intended to offer both inspiration and practical solutions to help guide the next chapter of West Indies cricket. “This engagement is not ceremonial. These are men who helped define our golden eras,” Shallow explained. “Their perspectives will be invaluable as we shape the next phase of our cricket development. We intend for this gathering to result in tangible, actionable recommendations.” While the recent series outcome has prompted reflection within the cricketing community, CWI emphasized the importance of maintaining a forward-looking approach. The board remains committed to long-term planning and rebuilding a strong, competitive Test team. West Indies cricket has seen significant success in the T20 format, but the rise of shorter formats has presented challenges for the traditional Test arena. CWI hopes that renewed focus and expert input will help bridge this gap and encourage greater interest and preparation for red-ball cricket. The strategic meeting is expected to produce a roadmap focused on resilience, performance development, and fostering a renewed culture of excellence. With leadership from some of the game’s greatest Caribbean players, West Indies cricket aims to build a future rooted in its proud and storied legacy
