RUDA to Build 46 km Embankments Along River Ravi
The Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) has announced plans to construct 46 kilometers of embankments on both sides of the River Ravi over the next three years.
Rao Intizar Ali, Project In-Charge for River Training Works, shared the details during a media briefing on Monday. He noted that previous embankments built over a 7-kilometer stretch had successfully protected several villages in Sapphire Bay from flooding.
Following recent floods, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed RUDA to accelerate construction work. Rao Intizar said, “We plan to complete 30-foot embankments on both sides of the 46-kilometer stretch within three years. The riverbed itself will cover one kilometer.” He added that the Punjab government will assist in clearing encroachments along the river to ensure smooth progress.
When asked about previous delays, Rao Intizar explained that land acquisition issues had slowed the project. However, with the chief minister instructing all departments to coordinate with RUDA, he expressed confidence that the project would now proceed quickly.
He concluded, “We are optimistic that the embankments will be completed within the planned timeline, providing long-term protection to Lahore’s surrounding areas against future flooding.”
