Sindh Orders Closure of Schools in Karachi Amid Heavy Rains

Karachi: The Sindh government has announced the closure of all educational institutions in Karachi after heavy monsoon rains lashed the city, following a weather advisory from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

A notification issued by the Karachi commissioner on September 9 confirmed that all public and private schools, colleges, and universities within the Karachi Division will remain closed.

Weather Forecast

According to the PMD, Karachi is expected to experience intermittent rain, wind, and thunderstorms on Wednesday, with temperatures ranging between 27°C and 29°C.

The forecast added that:

  • Minimum temperature will remain between 25°C and 27°C

  • Morning humidity is expected at 85–95%

  • Evening humidity is likely to stay between 80–90%

As of 8am Wednesday, Karachi had already recorded 47.7mm of rainfall.

Rescue & Relief Operations

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah directed Rescue 1122 teams and the district administration to remain on high alert, working overnight to evacuate residents trapped in flooded areas.

Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassaanul Haseeb Khan said joint efforts with the Pakistan Army helped rescue several people, including:

  • 10 residents in Saadi Town

  • Families from Saima Society (two men, three women, six children)

  • Eight people trapped in Nashr Basti and Isa Nagri

In total, more than 350 citizens were shifted to safety.

Casualties Reported

The heavy downpour also led to tragic incidents:

  • Two teenagers lost their lives due to electrocution

  • One teenager drowned in a separate rain-related accident

Impact Across Sindh

Beyond Karachi, rural districts such as Tharparkar and Dadu have also been severely affected. Continuous rainfall over the past several days has damaged hundreds of straw-mud houses, leaving families displaced.

The PMD further reported that the deep depression responsible for the rainfall will gradually move towards Balochistan, weakening into a low-pressure system.
