AJK Shuts Schools for Two Days After Heavy Rains, Landslides, and Cloudburst Tragedy
Muzaffarabad, August 14, 2025 –
The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government has announced the closure of all public and private educational institutions for two days — August 15 and 16 — following heavy rains, landslides, and a deadly cloudburst in the region.
According to an official notification from the Education Department, the move aims to safeguard students and teachers from the heightened risk of flooding and landslides amid ongoing bad weather.
Cloudburst Claims Six Lives in Muzaffarabad
The situation escalated yesterday when a cloudburst in the Naseerabad area of Muzaffarabad triggered flash floods, tragically killing six members of the same family.
In Bagh district, torrential rains caused rivers and streams to overflow, while high-level flooding was reported in Bhimber Nullah, Samahni, impacting low-lying communities.
Gilgit-Baltistan Also Affected
Heavy rains have also battered Gilgit-Baltistan, causing multiple landslides and flash floods. Authorities have confirmed 10 fatalities in various incidents across the region.
More Rain Expected – Authorities on High Alert
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in the next 24–48 hours, prompting disaster management teams to remain vigilant. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow official safety instructions.
