Shaheen Afridi Told to Improve Key Areas for T20I Comeback

Mike Hesson Backs Shaheen Afridi but Urges Improvement for T20I Return

Pakistan’s white-ball head coach Mike Hesson has voiced strong support for Shaheen Shah Afridi, describing him as a “world-class player,” while emphasizing the need for continued development if the left-arm pacer is to reclaim his spot in the national T20I side.

Speaking during Pakistan’s ongoing training camp ahead of the Bangladesh series in Karachi, Hesson made it clear that Afridi remains in the selectors’ plans but must align with the team’s evolving strategy in white-ball cricket.

“Shaheen Shah Afridi is a world-class player. There’s no doubt about that,” said Hesson. “But like every other player at this camp, we’ve identified some areas he needs to work on. That’s why he’s here—he’s still very much in the frame for Pakistan in both T20 and ODI formats.”

📉 Tactical Shift Keeps Afridi on the Sidelines

Afridi, who once led Pakistan’s bowling attack across all formats, has recently been left out of key T20I squads, including the home series against Bangladesh. Hesson clarified that recent selections have been driven by form, match-ups, and the team’s long-term strategy—not past achievements.

“We had Hasan Ali, Haris Rauf, and Abbas Afridi perform really well in the last series. Haris is currently injured, and Hasan made way for Salman Mirza. Shaheen will get his opportunity,” he added. “But we want him to come back stronger and better prepared.”

The coach’s remarks point to a merit-based selection policy that values adaptability and performance over reputation. Hesson, who took charge earlier this year, has implemented a data-driven approach focused on clarity of roles and situational awareness.

🔍 A Focus on Player Development

Although Hesson did not specify the exact areas Afridi needs to work on, the message is clear: the coaching staff is prioritizing refinement and readiness, especially with key tournaments like the T20 World Cup and Asia Cup on the horizon.

“Players go through ups and downs in their careers,” Hesson said. “Our job is to help them improve so they’re more effective when they return to international duty.”

Afridi, who continues to impress in franchise leagues worldwide, will now look to translate that form into consistent performances for Pakistan. His return is not a matter of if, but when—provided he meets the expectations laid out by the coaching team.

✅ The Road Ahead for Shaheen Afridi

For now, Shaheen remains on the fringes, but the door is far from closed. With Pakistan entering a demanding phase of the international calendar, including high-profile series and ICC events, depth and form will be critical.

Hesson’s message is a clear one: past performances open the door, but current progress and adaptability keep it open.
