Speed Limit Announced for Electric Buses in Islamabad

CDA Sets Speed Limit for Electric Buses in Islamabad After Safety Concerns

Islamabad – The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has instructed drivers of electric buses in the capital to strictly follow new speed limits after reports of accidents linked to overspeeding.

According to officials, electric bus drivers must now adhere to a maximum speed of 40 km/h within sector areas and 45 km/h on highways. The advisory was issued following at least three non-fatal accidents reported on different routes.

CDA’s planning wing emphasized that extra caution is required since electric buses produce very little noise and are still a new addition to the city’s transport system. Proper handling is necessary to ensure passenger and pedestrian safety.

The buses are operated by the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), which added 170 electric buses to the fleet last year. Currently, only 120 buses are active across 20 routes due to limited charging infrastructure.

Officials confirmed that once depot upgrades are completed – including the installation of additional charging panels – the entire fleet of 170 buses will be operational.

At present, around 60,000 passengers use the electric bus service daily. CDA estimates that the number could increase to 100,000 commuters per day once the full fleet hits the roads later this month.

The new speed restrictions are part of broader efforts to improve safety and efficiency while promoting eco-friendly transport solutions in Islamabad.
