Tamil Nadu Rally Stampede Leaves Dozens Dead and Injured
KARUR, INDIA: At least 29 people lost their lives and more than 50 others were injured in a tragic stampede during a political rally addressed by Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay, according to a report by The Hindu.
Emergency Response
Tamil Nadu Health Minister MA Subramanian confirmed that emergency teams were rushed to the site. At least 24 doctors from Tiruchi and 20 from Salem were deployed to provide urgent medical assistance in Karur, where the rally was held.
Local hospitals were placed on high alert to treat the large number of injured.
Conflicting Death Toll Reports
While The Hindu reported 29 fatalities, The Times of India placed the figure at 10 deaths. Officials have yet to release an official toll, and Reuters reported that immediate contact with health ministry representatives was not possible.
Previous Stampede Incident in India
This tragedy follows another incident earlier this year in Uttarakhand, where at least six people were killed and many others injured in a stampede at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, a major Hindu pilgrimage site on the banks of the Ganges River.
