Thousands referred for liver cancer checks after on-the-spot scan

NHS Expands Mobile Liver Scan Program, Thousands Referred for Cancer Checks

Thousands of people across England are now being referred for liver cancer checks following the NHS’s expansion of mobile scanning services.

The innovative program uses on-the-spot FibroScan tests to detect cirrhosis (liver scarring) or advanced fibrosis—both of which significantly increase the risk of developing liver cancer.

Since its launch two years ago, more than 112,800 people have been scanned, and around 8,470 individuals have been referred for further tests. The Symptoms Of Liver Cancer

Why This Matters

  • Every year, there are around 6,600 new cases of liver cancer in the UK.

  • Early detection is often difficult, as symptoms may not appear until the disease is advanced.

  • By targeting high-risk groups—such as people with heavy alcohol use, viral hepatitis history, or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease—the NHS aims to save lives through prevention and timely treatment.NHS on-the-spot liver scans identify hundreds at risk of cancer | ITV News

Mobile Scan Access

The number of mobile liver scan trucks has nearly doubled, increasing from 11 to 20. These units travel to accessible locations, including:

  • GP surgeries

  • Food banks

  • Diabetes and sexual health clinics

  • Homeless shelters

  • Even football stadiums and supermarkets

This community-based approach helps reach people who may not otherwise undergo screening.

Expert Insights

Professor Peter Johnson, NHS National Cancer Director, highlighted the program’s impact:

“By reaching out into communities and making it easier for people to get checked, we are catching more cancers at an early stage, when treatment is most effective. This can save thousands of lives.”

Pamela Healy, Chief Executive of the British Liver Trust, added:

“Liver cancer often develops silently, with many diagnosed only when treatment options are limited. This program is already helping thousands access vital care and reduce their risk.”

Symptoms of Liver Cancer

The NHS advises looking out for:

  • Yellowing of eyes or skin (jaundice)

  • Loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss

  • Persistent fatigue or flu-like symptoms

  • A lump or pain on the right side of the abdomen

  • Digestive issues, including nausea, indigestion, or a swollen tummy

Bottom Line

The NHS mobile liver scan program is proving to be a game-changer in the fight against liver cancer. By bringing quick and simple tests directly into communities, thousands more people are being diagnosed early—when treatment has the highest chance of success.
