Toll of India Himalayan flood likely to be at least 70

Himalayan Floods Leave 68 Missing as Rescuers Search for Survivors

UTTARAKHAND, INDIA: At least 68 people remain missing a week after a devastating flood swept through the Himalayan town of Dharali, burying buildings in mud and icy water. The disaster, which struck on August 5, has already claimed four confirmed lives, raising fears that the toll could exceed 70.

Survivors’ videos show a terrifying wall of muddy water engulfing multi-storey apartment blocks. Rescue teams are combing the wreckage with sniffer dogs and ground-penetrating radar, but blocked roads and damaged communications have slowed the search. Among the missing are 44 Indians, 22 Nepalis, and nine soldiers.

Experts say the floods were likely caused by intense rains and the collapse of glacial debris. Himalayan glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates due to climate change, increasing the risk of landslides and flash floods for local communities.

Officials and climate scientists warn that this disaster is a stark reminder of the urgent need for preparedness and sustainable development in vulnerable mountainous regions.
