NDMA Urges Citizens to Avoid Travel to Gilgit-Baltistan Amid Rains and Landslides
ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a travel advisory, urging citizens and tourists to postpone trips to Gilgit-Baltistan due to ongoing heavy rains, flooding, and landslides that have severely disrupted road networks.
According to the National Emergency Operations Centre, the region remains highly vulnerable as continuous downpours and glacial activity pose serious safety risks. Damaged bridges and blocked roads have left many routes inaccessible.
The advisory highlighted that landslides have blocked the Shyok River bridge near Saltoro, while the Astak Bridge on the Jaglot–Skardu Road has been partially damaged, restricting traffic to one lane.
Several roads remain closed, including Diamer–Ghizer Road, Shandur Road, Khalti Road, Dain Road, and Ishkoman Road. In Skardu, connectivity to Kargil, Kharmang, and Shigar has also been disrupted.
Despite challenges, restoration teams have reopened some key routes. Traffic has resumed on the Surmo Bridge in Ghanche, Bagicha Road in Skardu, the Gulmit–Gojal Road in Hunza, the Jaglot–Gilgit Road via Guro, and Chilam Road in Astore.
The NDMA has advised the public to stay updated through official channels before attempting any travel to Gilgit-Baltistan.
