Morocco and DR Congo Keep Quarter-Final Hopes Alive at CHAN

Nairobi, August 14, 2025 – Two-time champions Morocco and DR Congo kept their quarter-final dreams alive in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) with impressive wins on Thursday.

Morocco 3-1 Zambia
Morocco dominated Zambia at the Nyayo National Stadium, but it took until first-half injury time for captain Mohamed Hrimat to convert Youssef Mehri’s corner for the opening goal. Zambia appeared to equalize in the 65th minute through defender Happy Nsiku, but VAR ruled the goal out due to an earlier infringement.

Morocco quickly doubled their lead through Oussama Lamlaoui, before Zambia’s Andrew Phiri pulled one back in the 70th minute. Sabir Bougrine sealed the win with a stoppage-time strike, putting Morocco in second place in Group A with six points, just behind leaders Kenya.

DR Congo 2-0 Angola
Meanwhile, DR Congo ended Angola’s hopes of progressing with a convincing 2-0 victory. Jephte Kitambala and Mokonzi Katumbwe scored second-half goals to secure the win, keeping the Congolese side in contention for the knockout stages.

Both Morocco and DR Congo sit on six points in Group A, setting up a crucial clash on Sunday to decide who will top the group. Kenya will face Zambia in the other key match to finalize the quarter-final line-up.
