Typhoon Ragasa takes aim at China after leaving 14 dead in Taiwan, lashing Hong Kong

Typhoon Ragasa Slams Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Southern China

Typhoon Ragasa, the strongest tropical cyclone of the year, has caused widespread destruction across Asia, leaving 14 dead in Taiwan and forcing mass evacuations in southern China as millions brace for its impact.

Taiwan Devastated by Floods

Taiwan’s eastern Hualien County was among the hardest-hit areas, where an overflowing barrier lake sent torrents of water into Guangfu town. Authorities reported 129 people missing and residents criticized the lack of early warnings.

Since Monday, Ragasa’s outer bands have drenched the island, disrupting daily life and damaging infrastructure.

Hong Kong Hit by Ferocious Winds

In Hong Kong, massive waves battered coastal areas, flooding roads and even sweeping seawater into luxury hotels. The Hospital Authority confirmed 50 injuries, while nearly 800 people sought shelter in emergency facilities. Temporary closures were reported across the city, though the stock market remained open — a sign of upgraded resilience since past superstorms.

Southern China on High Alert

China’s Guangdong Province, home to nearly 50 million people, is now directly in the typhoon’s path. Over 770,000 residents have been evacuated, with the emergency ministry deploying thousands of tents, beds, and rescue supplies. The marine authority issued its highest “red” wave warning, anticipating storm surges up to 2.8 meters.

In Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and other major cities, shops used trucks to shield storefronts, while residents cautiously monitored conditions. Authorities warned of severe flooding in low-lying areas.

Typhoon Ragasa’s Strength

Ragasa rapidly intensified over the Pacific, reaching Category 5 super typhoon status with winds of 260 kph (162 mph) before weakening to a still-dangerous Category 3. The storm continues to threaten infrastructure, homes, and power supplies as it moves inland.

Regional Impact

  • In Macau, casinos were forced to shut down gaming floors, with hotels sealing doors to protect guests.

  • In Hong Kong, a woman and her child were swept into the ocean but are now receiving critical care.

  • The Pearl River Delta, one of China’s most developed regions, remains on high alert despite improved preparedness measures.

What’s Next

Typhoon Ragasa is expected to make landfall along China’s southern coast by late Wednesday, with heavy rains and storm surges likely to continue into Thursday.

Officials urge residents to stay indoors, avoid low-lying coastal areas, and follow evacuation orders as the storm continues its destructive path.
