UN Human Rights Council to Hold Urgent Debate on Israel’s Qatar Airstrike
ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will convene an urgent debate in Geneva on Tuesday regarding Israel’s September 9 airstrike in Qatar that targeted Hamas leaders, the Council announced on Monday.
Background of the Airstrike
According to Hamas, the Israeli strike killed five of its members but did not eliminate any senior leadership figures. The incident has sparked a strong backlash across the Arab and Islamic world, with many countries condemning it as a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty and international law.
Regional Reactions
The strike has further strained relations between Israel and the Gulf Arab states, particularly the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which normalized ties with Israel under the Abraham Accords in 2020. In response, Gulf nations have shown unity in condemning the attack and calling for accountability.
Debate Requested by OIC and GCC
The urgent debate at the UNHRC was formally requested by Pakistan on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and by Kuwait on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
This will be the 10th urgent debate held by the Human Rights Council since its establishment in 2006, underscoring the serious international concern over the situation.
