Uruguay Clinches Sudaméricano 2025, Qualifies for Rugby World Cup 2027
Uruguay confirmed their dominance in the region by winning Sudaméricano 2025, defeating Chile 46-37 on aggregate, and securing a spot at the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027.
The first-leg advantage of 12 points from Santiago proved crucial as the second-leg clash at Estadio Charrúa tested Uruguay’s experience and composure. Captain Santiago Arata led a disciplined forward pack, while fly-half Felipe Etcheverry contributed 13 points, helping Los Teros complete the qualification.
Chile showed resilience, winning the second leg 21-18, but it was not enough to overturn Uruguay’s aggregate lead. Chile will now face Samoa, Canada, or the USA in the South America/Pacific play-off in a two-legged series, with the winner qualifying for RWC 2027 and the loser getting a final chance in the Final Qualification Tournament in November.

With this win, Uruguay adds the Sudaméricano title to Peñarol Rugby’s 2025 Super Rugby Americas crown, marking a stellar year for Uruguayan rugby. They are now the 20th team to qualify for RWC 2027, with four more spots to be decided through upcoming regional and global qualifiers.
Following historic performances, including the famous 2019 upset over Fiji, Los Teros will look to make a strong mark on the global rugby stage once again.
