Trump, Infantino Announce 2026 FIFA World Cup Draw to Be Held in Washington
Washington | August 23, 2025
US President Donald Trump has confirmed that the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place on December 5, 2025, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Standing alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the White House, Trump described the upcoming tournament as “probably the biggest event in sports.”
The 2026 World Cup, featuring 48 teams for the first time, will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Trophy Moment at the White House
Infantino brought the iconic World Cup trophy with him for the announcement. He noted that only heads of state and tournament winners are allowed to touch it — before inviting Trump to hold it.
“Since you are a winner, of course you can touch it,” Infantino said.
Trump, smiling, replied: “Can I keep it? That’s a beautiful piece of gold.”
The FIFA president later presented Trump with a symbolic ticket — Row 1, Seat 1 — for the World Cup Final, which is scheduled for July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Security & Fan Access
Trump said the government would ensure a safe environment for fans traveling to the United States for the event. He highlighted increased security measures in Washington to make the capital welcoming for visitors.
On visas, he added that the process would be “very easy” for most international fans, though travelers from certain countries could face stricter requirements.
A Historic Moment
The United States was awarded joint hosting rights in 2018 during Trump’s first term. Now, with the tournament less than a year away, preparations are in full swing.
The draw ceremony in December will officially determine group-stage matchups, setting the stage for what is expected to be the biggest FIFA World Cup in history.
