Water Supply Disruption in Karachi as K-2 Pipeline Repair Underway

 October 15, 2025

KARACHI: The Karachi Water Corporation (KWC) has announced a temporary suspension of water supply to several parts of the city due to emergency repair work on the K-2 water pipeline at the North East Pumping Station. The maintenance follows a major leakage detected in one of Karachi’s key 48-inch-diameter water lines, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

💧 Repair Work in Full Swing

According to a KWC spokesperson, technical teams are working in 24-hour shifts to repair the damaged pipeline and replace critical valves to avoid future breakdowns.

“The repair is being carried out on an emergency basis, and all efforts are being made to restore normal supply as soon as possible,” the spokesperson said.

⚙️ Impact on Water Supply

As part of the repair process, three out of eleven pumps at the K-2 station and one pump at the Dhabeji Pumping Station have been temporarily shut down. This partial closure is expected to reduce Karachi’s daily water supply by approximately 150 million gallons per day (MGD).

Despite the disruption, the KWC confirmed that around 500 MGD of water will still be supplied through alternate channels to minimize the impact on residents.

🏘️ Areas Affected

Residents in the following areas may experience low pressure or temporary shortages during the repair period:

  • Gulberg

  • Liaquatabad

  • North Nazimabad

  • Gulshan-e-Iqbal

  • Parts of Safora and nearby localities

The KWC has advised citizens to store water in advance and use it carefully until full restoration of supply.

🏗️ Government Response

The city’s persistent water challenges have once again drawn political attention. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari urged the federal government to accelerate efforts to resolve Karachi’s water crisis, calling for action in the spirit of “Shehbaz Speed.”

Speaking at the inauguration of the Hub Canal Project, Bilawal emphasized cooperation between federal and provincial authorities to ensure reliable water delivery.

“We are prioritizing water supply and treatment projects that will benefit both residents and the industrial sector,” he said.

📢 Key Takeaway

While Karachi faces temporary inconvenience, the ongoing repairs are crucial to strengthening the city’s aging water infrastructure. The KWC assured citizens that all resources are being mobilized to restore full service as quickly and safely as possible.
