Windows’ Dark Mode is Finally Getting Its Long Overdue Upgrade

Windows 11 Expands Dark Mode to File Operation Dialogs in Latest Preview

Microsoft is rolling out wider dark mode support in Windows 11, with the latest preview build bringing file operation dialogs, like copy and delete prompts, into the dark theme. Previously limited to light mode, these updates help reduce visual inconsistencies across the operating system.

Windows observer Phantomofearth noted that while dialog backgrounds now match dark mode, buttons remain light-themed, indicating the update is still in progress.

No Official Announcement Yet

Microsoft has not formally confirmed the dark mode expansion. However, its appearance in preview builds suggests that the Windows 11 25H2 update, expected later this year, could include broader changes. Many older components, such as the Control Panel, Run dialog, and file properties windows, still lack dark mode support.

Dark Mode Evolution

Dark mode first arrived on Windows 10 in 2016, but adoption across the platform has been slow. File Explorer itself received dark theme support only years later. By comparison, Apple implemented system-wide dark mode on macOS with Mojave in 2018.

More Design Changes Ahead

Along with dark mode improvements, Microsoft is testing the Liquid Glass UI, which emphasizes translucency and visual layering. This could be another step toward a modern, unified Windows interface.
