Viv Richards, Carl Hooper demand apology from Brian Lara over false claims in book

Lara’s Book Sparks Controversy with Richards and Hooper

Brian Lara’s recent book, “LARA: The England Chronicles,” has ignited controversy with West Indies cricket legends Viv Richards and Carl Hooper demanding an apology from Lara. The book claims that Richards, as captain, would make Lara cry every three weeks and Hooper once a week. In response, Richards and Hooper issued a joint statement calling for Lara to clarify his claims, accusing him of “grossly misinterpreting” events and attempting to profit from deceit.

Lara’s Allegations

Lara’s book describes Richards as a strict taskmaster whose intimidating tone could frighten players. “Viv used to make me cry every three weeks, but he would make Carl cry once a week,” Lara wrote. “His tone of voice is intimidating, and if you’re not strong enough, you can take that personally and be affected by it.”

Richards and Hooper’s Response

Richards and Hooper refuted these allegations, calling them “false” and expressing dismay at the portrayal. They stated that Richards’ actions were neither coarse nor frightening and that his advice was meant to benefit the team.

“Sir Vivian Richards and Mr. Carl Hooper are deeply disheartened by the gross misrepresentations made about them in Mr. Brian Lara’s recently released book. The allegations not only distort the reality of their relationship but also impugn their characters in an unjust and harmful manner,” their joint statement read.

They emphasized that Richards had always been a supportive mentor to Hooper, with their nearly 40-year relationship built on mutual respect and camaraderie. They demanded Lara issue a public retraction and apology for the harm caused.

Impact on Relationships

Lara, who debuted for the West Indies in 1990 and played one game with Richards but nearly 15 years with Hooper, now faces strained relationships with both. The controversy has the potential to affect the long-term relationships between these cricket icons.

Richards and Hooper stressed that their interactions were always positive and that the book’s misrepresentation has caused undue distress to both them and their families. They called on Lara to set the record straight for the sake of their personal and professional lives.
