Kashmir Authorities Issue High Alert Flood Warnings

⚠️ AJK Issues High Flood Alert Amid Heavy Monsoon Rains

MUZAFFARABAD – Authorities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) have declared a high-alert warning following persistent monsoon rains, which are raising the risk of major flooding in the region. Emergency measures have been activated by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) to protect lives and property.

🌊 River Jhelum at Risk of Overflow

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), water inflows at Mangla Dam are projected to increase sharply—from 350,000 to 450,000 cusecs—within 24 hours. This could result in a severe flood situation, especially for low-lying areas near riverbanks.

🚨 Emergency Response Activated

The SDMA has ordered the immediate evacuation of residents living in flood-prone areas. In response to the threat, emergency services have been placed on 48-hour high alert, including:

  • Rescue 1122

  • Fire brigade

  • Police

  • Civil defense units

All personnel are on standby for rapid deployment in the event of flash flooding or structural damage caused by heavy rainfall.

🛑 Travel and Tourism Restrictions

Local authorities have been directed to:

  • Restrict vehicle movement in vulnerable zones

  • Warn tourists about potential hazards

  • Use public messaging tools to raise awareness and ensure community preparedness

These steps aim to minimize risks and avoid loss of life or damage to property.

🔄 Nationwide Coordination with NDMA

In partnership with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), district and provincial teams are maintaining round-the-clock monitoring. NDMA has also advised concerned departments to ensure the availability of:

  • Rescue boats and dewatering pumps

  • Backup electricity

  • Early warning systems

📢 Advisory for Residents

Residents in AJK and nearby flood-prone areas are strongly advised to:

✅ Stay informed via official weather alerts and local broadcasts
✅ Avoid travel near rivers, streams, or low-lying roads
✅ Prepare emergency kits with food, water, medicines, and important documents
✅ Move livestock and vehicles to safer, elevated areas
