Afghanistan Bus Crash Kills 76, Several Injured in Herat
Herat, Afghanistan: The death toll from a tragic road accident in western Afghanistan has risen to 76, with three others seriously injured, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The collision occurred on Tuesday night in Guzara district, near Herat city, when a bus carrying Afghan migrants returning from Iran crashed into a motorcycle and a fuel truck, sparking a fire.
Mohammad Yousuf Saeedi, spokesman for the Herat provincial government, said the bus was transporting Afghans who had recently returned from Iran to Kabul.
This incident is among the deadliest traffic accidents in Afghanistan in recent years, according to the state-run Bakhtar News Agency.
Traffic accidents remain common in Afghanistan due to poor road conditions, unsafe driving practices, and limited traffic regulation. In December 2024, two separate bus crashes involving fuel tankers and trucks in central Afghanistan killed at least 52 people.
UN migration data shows that around 1.5 million Afghans have returned home from Iran and Pakistan since the start of 2025, following pressure from host countries to leave after decades of residence.
Authorities continue rescue and investigation operations at the site, while families of the victims mourn the loss of loved ones.
