Air India Crash in Ahmedabad: 259 Victims Identified, Final Death Toll Pending

AHMEDABAD: Authorities in Gujarat, India, have confirmed that 259 of the 260 victims from the recent Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad have been identified, with DNA results still pending for one individual, officials reported on Tuesday.

The tragic incident occurred on June 12, when a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by Air India, bound for London’s Gatwick Airport, crashed shortly after takeoff. The aircraft, carrying 242 people, lost altitude within seconds and struck a medical college hostel, igniting a massive fireball.

One Survivor, Dozens Killed on the Ground

In total, 19 people on the ground were also killed, bringing the death toll to 260. One person aboard the aircraft miraculously survived, according to official reports.

Speaking to media, Rakesh Joshi, Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, stated:

Joshi also noted that the crash site is still being cleared, and authorities are exercising caution before confirming the final death toll.

Majority Identified Through DNA Testing

According to a statement from the local government:

  • 253 victims were identified through DNA sample matching

  • Six were recognized via facial identification

  • Remains of 256 victims have already been handed over to families

Air India Under Regulatory Scrutiny

The crash comes at a time when Air India is under increased scrutiny from aviation regulators. Days before this update, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a warning to the airline over repeated violations concerning pilot duty scheduling.

An official DGCA order dated June 20 directed Air India to remove three key executives from crew scheduling roles. These include:

  • A Divisional Vice President

  • A Chief Manager of Crew Scheduling

  • One Planning Executive

The decision follows incidents involving flights from Bengaluru to London on May 16 and 17, which exceeded the 10-hour maximum pilot flight time.

The DGCA cited “systemic failures in scheduling protocols” and criticized the lack of disciplinary action taken by the airline’s management.

Air India’s Ongoing Transformation Under Tata Group

Since its acquisition by the Tata Group in 2022, Air India has been undergoing a significant transformation aimed at restoring its global reputation. The airline has long faced criticism over service quality, and this recent tragedy, along with regulatory concerns, presents another major challenge.

Ongoing Investigation and Support for Families

As investigations continue into the cause of the crash, families of the victims are receiving support for repatriation and final rites. Authorities have pledged full cooperation to ensure transparency and accountability.
