Another Big City is Getting Electric Tram After Lahore

Islamabad to Launch Electric Tram Service to Boost Public Transport

Islamabad is gearing up to introduce a modern electric tram bus service, aimed at transforming the capital’s public transportation system. The initiative is part of the government’s broader vision to offer sustainable, inclusive, and efficient travel options for residents.

📍 The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting held at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) headquarters, chaired by Muhammad Ali Randhawa, who currently serves as both the CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner of Islamabad.

🏗️ Infrastructure Overhaul Underway

To support this major upgrade, the CDA has already started upgrading 140 existing bus stops across the city. Plans are also in place to construct over 200 brand-new bus stops, all of which will be:

  • Equipped with digital boards

  • Displaying real-time schedules

  • Featuring safety alerts and advertisement space

🚊 Features of the Electric Tram System

According to Chairman Randhawa, the electric tram system will feature:

  • Multi-compartment designs for higher passenger capacity

  • Dedicated accessibility options for women and differently-abled individuals

  • Eco-friendly, low-emission technology

  • Affordable fare structure for daily commuters

The feasibility study for the project is currently in progress, with Randhawa directing the team to fast-track completion to allow for timely implementation.

🤝 Public-Private Partnership Model Under Consideration

To ensure the long-term sustainability of the tram service, the CDA is evaluating:

  • Financial viability models

  • Public-private partnerships (PPP)

  • Opportunities for investment and collaboration with private sector partners

Clear goals and timelines will be set to keep the project on track and aligned with Islamabad’s development strategy.

🚍 Current Electric Bus Network a Success

Islamabad’s existing electric bus service is already a hit among citizens, transporting over 90,000 passengers daily. Known for its:

  • Eco-friendliness

  • Affordability

  • Reliability

The success of the electric bus initiative provides a solid foundation for expanding into tram services, further improving the city’s urban mobility.

💬 With a growing focus on green infrastructure and smart urban planning, Islamabad’s upcoming tram project could set new standards for sustainable transport in Pakistan.
