Naomi Osaka Stuns Coco Gauff to Reach US Open Quarter-Finals After Five Years
New York, September 2, 2025: In one of the most anticipated matches of the 2025 US Open, Japan’s Naomi Osaka delivered a brilliant performance to defeat third seed Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-2 in the women’s singles fourth round on Monday.
The clash at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center brought back memories of their memorable 2019 encounter, when a 15-year-old Gauff faced Osaka in New York for the first time. This time, the four-time Grand Slam champion was in complete control, showcasing flashes of her vintage form.
Gauff, the reigning 2023 US Open champion, struggled with her forehand and serve throughout the match, while Osaka capitalized on every opportunity to dominate from start to finish.
With this victory, Osaka advanced to the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows for the first time in five years, marking a strong comeback on one of tennis’s biggest stages. She will next face either Karolina Muchova (Czech Republic, 11th seed) or Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine, 27th seed) in her quest for another Grand Slam title.
The match was not just about points and sets—it was about two fan favourites meeting again in New York, creating another memorable chapter in their rivalry.
