Defending champion Coco Gauff advanced to the fourth round of the 2024 US Open after a hard-fought victory over Elina Svitolina on Friday, August 30.
In a thrilling third-round match, Gauff overcame her Ukrainian opponent with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win, showcasing her resilience and skill on the court.
The match began with a closely contested opening set, where Gauff faced tough resistance from Svitolina. Despite having two break points at 3-3, unforced errors allowed Svitolina to maintain her serve and take control of the set, eventually winning the final three games to claim the set 6-3.
However, Gauff, the third seed, quickly turned the tide in the second set. She broke Svitolina’s serve and maintained an impressive 70% win rate on her second serve. With renewed determination, Gauff took the second set 6-3, leveling the match and shifting the momentum in her favor.
In the decisive third set, Gauff continued to dominate, breaking Svitolina in the opening game.
