Coco Gauff comes back to defeat Elina Svitolina in three sets and reach fourth round at 2024 US Open

Defending champion Coco Gauff advanced to the fourth round of the 2024 US Open after a hard-fought victory over Elina Svitolina on Friday, August 30.

In a thrilling third-round match, Gauff overcame her Ukrainian opponent with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win, showcasing her resilience and skill on the court.

The match began with a closely contested opening set, where Gauff faced tough resistance from Svitolina. Despite having two break points at 3-3, unforced errors allowed Svitolina to maintain her serve and take control of the set, eventually winning the final three games to claim the set 6-3.

However, Gauff, the third seed, quickly turned the tide in the second set. She broke Svitolina’s serve and maintained an impressive 70% win rate on her second serve. With renewed determination, Gauff took the second set 6-3, leveling the match and shifting the momentum in her favor.

In the decisive third set, Gauff continued to dominate, breaking Svitolina in the opening game. Despite a late effort by Svitolina, Gauff remained focused and controlled the match, capitalizing on her opponent’s unforced errors. Gauff’s powerful serves and confident play in front of the home crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium sealed the victory.

Gauff now advances to face fellow American Emma Navarro in the fourth round of the US Open, as she continues her quest to defend her title at the final Grand Slam of the year.
