Crackdown in Lahore over fake, deepfake videos targeting politicians

LAHORE – Authorities in Lahore have launched a targeted crackdown on the creators and distributors of fake and deepfake videos, especially those aimed at politicians and government officials. The action comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to spread misinformation on social media.

According to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Investigation, 23 cases have been registered under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) within the last 24 hours. Officials have made it clear that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in sharing inappropriate or misleading content online.

“Individuals attempting to ridicule state institutions or incite public unrest through fabricated content will be dealt with firmly,” the DIG stated. “These actions are a direct threat to the country’s social and political stability.”

The increasing use of deepfake technology, which uses AI to create highly realistic fake videos or audio, has alarmed authorities. Officials point out that the tools required to create such content are becoming more accessible, making it easier to manipulate public perception.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Cyber Crime confirmed that detailed investigations are underway, with comprehensive charge sheets being prepared to present solid evidence in court.

Public Figures Speak Out

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari recently shared her own experience after being targeted by a deepfake video intended to discredit her. In a heartfelt interview, she described the emotional toll it took on her and her family.

“It was a deeply upsetting experience,” said Bokhari, 48. “But my daughter reminded me that we have to stand strong against such attacks. These tools are being used to silence and intimidate women in leadership roles.”

Bokhari emphasized the need to modernize judicial and law enforcement systems to keep pace with the evolving digital landscape, particularly in protecting women from digital harassment.

Growing Demand for Regulation and Awareness

The crackdown has sparked renewed calls for stronger regulations and greater public awareness about the risks of AI-generated misinformation. Experts have emphasized the importance of digital literacy and responsible content sharing in order to prevent the spread of deceptive material online.

Authorities have also encouraged citizens to report suspicious content and avoid sharing unverified media, especially when it involves sensitive or potentially damaging information about individuals or institutions.

This ongoing initiative marks a significant step toward ensuring a safer and more responsible digital environment in Pakistan.
