Heavy Rain Hits Rawalpindi and Islamabad, More Showers Expected This Week

RAWALPINDI/ISLAMABAD – A strong spell of monsoon rain, accompanied by gusty winds, swept through Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Tuesday, offering much-needed relief from recent high temperatures. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed that over 65mm of rainfall has been recorded so far in the region, with more expected later in the week.

Rainfall Brings Weather Relief

The rain began early in the morning and continued at intervals throughout the day. Not only did the downpour cool down the scorching weather, but it also improved humidity levels, bringing a sense of relief to residents of the twin cities.

According to PMD data:

  • Bokra (Rawalpindi) received 64mm of rain

  • Pir Wadhai saw 50mm

  • Shamsabad recorded 54mm

  • Saidpur (Islamabad) experienced 52mm

WASA Declares Rain Emergency

In response to the heavy rain, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) declared a rain emergency in Rawalpindi. Emergency response teams and machinery have been deployed across vulnerable, low-lying areas to manage waterlogging and reduce the risk of urban flooding.

The water level in Nullah Lai rose significantly:

  • 10 feet at Katarian

  • 9 feet at Gawalmandi

Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to remain alert and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities.

Weather Forecast for the Week

The PMD has forecast continued rainfall in Rawalpindi and Islamabad throughout the week. Authorities have urged the public to stay cautious, especially during peak rain hours.

In addition to the twin cities, Kotli and surrounding areas of Azad Kashmir also experienced heavy rain and strong winds.

Monsoon Season Officially Underway

According to the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the monsoon season has officially started across the province. The first spell of rain is expected to continue until July 1.

Rain and wind are likely in the following regions:

  • Northern Punjab: Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Gujarat, Jhelum, and Gujranwala

  • Southern Punjab: Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Bahawalpur
