Ex-Olympians Urge Mohsin Naqvi to Rescue Pakistan Hockey

Pakistan Hockey Looks to PCB Chairman for Pro League Revival Support

Pakistan’s national hockey team finds itself at a critical turning point, with a rare opportunity to rejoin international hockey’s top tier through the FIH Pro League. However, financial hurdles and administrative setbacks continue to threaten the team’s future — prompting hockey legends to look beyond traditional channels for support.

Tauqeer Dar Appeals to PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi

Former Olympian and ex-national coach Tauqeer Dar has made a heartfelt appeal to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, urging him to step in and rescue Pakistan hockey — just as he has led reforms in cricket.

“Forget the government for a moment — Mohsin Naqvi should support hockey the way he backs cricket,” Dar told Geo News. “The Pro League is not just a tournament — it’s an investment in our sporting identity.”

A Missed Chance, a New Lifeline

Pakistan previously withdrew from the Pro League due to internal challenges — a move Dar labels as “disastrous,” especially since India took their place and went on to claim two Olympic bronze medals.

Dar likened the FIH Pro League to cricket’s Champions Trophy or World Cup, noting that consistent competition against elite teams like Belgium and the Netherlands is vital for Pakistan’s player development.

“We don’t expect to teach the world — our players will learn from the best, and only then will we rise again,” he added.

More Voices Join the Call

Other former stars, including Olympian Khawaja Junaid and head coach Tahir Zaman, have echoed Dar’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of this opportunity for the revival of Pakistan hockey.

Will PCB Step Up?

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has faced mounting criticism for its inability to secure funding. While the government is reportedly working on a financial package, no formal announcement has been made.

Meanwhile, the PCB remains Pakistan’s only self-sustaining sports body, giving Chairman Mohsin Naqvi a unique position of influence. Former players are now counting on him to support the national hockey cause — and fans across the country are waiting for a decision.

A Defining Moment for Pakistan Hockey

With the Pro League window open and time running short, this could be the last real chance for Pakistan hockey to make a global comeback. Whether the PCB steps in or not, what’s clear is that the legends of the game still believe in the sport — and in those who have the power to save it.
