Gwadar Port Can Earn $850 Million Per Year from Fisheries, Dates: Maritime Minister

Gwadar Port Can Generate Over $850 Million Annually, Says Federal Minister

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, revealed on Friday that Gwadar Port has the potential to earn over $850 million annually through value-added exports, especially in the fisheries and dates sectors. His remarks came during a key meeting focused on the operationalization and development of the strategic port.

🐟 Fisheries Sector Holds Massive Export Potential

The minister highlighted that Balochistan’s fisheries industry alone could contribute $645 million annually. With a potential fish catch of 300,000 tons, the region is rich in marine resources. However, outdated fishing methods, low processing capacity, and regulatory challenges have limited the actual output to nearly half of this potential.

Currently, 34 fish processing units are operational in Balochistan, but most are in need of modernization to align with international export standards. Upgrading these facilities could unlock significant revenue streams and create jobs for coastal communities.

🌴 Date Exports Could Bring in Over $200 Million

Focusing on agriculture, the minister pointed out that Panjgur and Turbat districts produce over 225,000 tons of dates annually. With proper value addition and packaging, exports from these regions could fetch between $200 million and $205 million on the global market.

✈️ Boost to Air Connectivity in Gwadar

In a bid to support investors and improve accessibility, PIA will increase its flights to Gwadar from one to three per week, including two flights to Karachi and one to Islamabad. The government is also considering chartered flight services to facilitate business and investment activity in the region.

🚢 Unlocking Gwadar’s True Potential

Minister Junaid emphasized that sustained investment, upgraded infrastructure, and targeted policy reforms are key to realizing Gwadar’s vast economic potential. The port city is a crucial part of Pakistan’s maritime and trade strategy, and its development could significantly boost national exports.

Stay tuned for further updates on Gwadar Port’s transformation into a regional trade powerhouse, and how government initiatives are paving the way for long-term economic growth.
