Robert Lewandowski Confident Ahead of New Season, Reflects on Career and Ballon d’Or Regret

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski says he still has plenty to offer as he enters the final year of his contract. Speaking to BBC Sport, the 36-year-old forward shared that he feels in great shape and ready for another productive season.

“When I see that I don’t have to catch up with the youngsters, but they have to catch up with me, it’s a good sign. I can still give my best,” Lewandowski said, adding that mentoring academy players has also become an important part of his game.

Lewandowski highlighted Lamine Yamal as a standout talent, calling the young winger “incredible” and praising his debut at just 15 years old. He also reflected on missing out on the 2020 Ballon d’Or, which was not awarded due to the pandemic, a year in which Leo Messi took the prize.

“I was at the peak of my career, and it’s still something I don’t fully understand,” he admitted. Lewandowski also noted this year’s contenders, praising Yamal and Raphinha for strong campaigns.

On a potential Premier League move, Lewandowski revealed he almost joined Manchester United while at Borussia Dortmund, but the transfer fell through. “Maybe I regret not having played in England,” he said, but added that he is content with his career, having enjoyed success with Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and now Barcelona.

Lewandowski concludes, “Every decision I made was a conscious choice. I am very happy with my career and feel I haven’t missed out on anything.”
